“Kosciuszko”, Richard Martin Art, 2006.

Inspired by a recent visit to Thredbo, Street’s latest series is based on Kosciuszko National Park, also known as The Snowy Mountains. The area forms a landscape of staggering diversity— magnificent wilderness areas of high plateaus, deep gullies, forests, heathland, alpine flowers, crystal-clear mountain streams, glacial lakes and winter snow.

Chaotic, gestural markings and expressive strokes have a sense of movement and vigour in these studies, the colours unmistakingly this cold, alpine area. The blue-purple-grey appearance of the trees shows that it has not been long since the bushfires devastated the area, and yet out of their destructive power, life and energy emerge and once again dominate.
